Word 2003 puts me back in with the dinosaurs

I've just recently installed office 2003 on a xp computer.
My computer isn't the fastest around but this is close to ridiculous.

At some time with every document Word does stops for a while (a minute or
so) to give me the fing.. euh, the hourglass.
When I do a copy paste operation between documents: 10 seconds delay or same
thing as above.
Closing Word also takes a long time.

I've searched around but no good solutions to date:
- no virus or malware
- I've told Word where to find the normal.dot template
- I've disabled Acrobat plug in
-...

Yes, and then I get to look at Microsoft advertising telling me to leave the
dinosaurs behind. Yeah right.

Thanks in advance
Bart

There's a problem with your setup somewhere. First, make absolutely certain
that Speech Recognition is Off/Disabled. If it is definitely off, then test
Word using Safe Mode.

Start Word using Start, Run and type in

winword /a

and press enter. This starts Word in Safe mode bypassing all third party
templates, add-ins, macros, etc. Test Word now: does it still pause for
thought in Safe Mode?
