word 2003 read only messages

In attempting to save document in word2003, I get message indicating document
is "read only" , some one else using document -- use "save as" instead.
Checked usual culprits: security tab, protected document etc. Not on a
network and saving to my hard drive. Happens some of time but not all of
time, though no pattern here I can decipher. What options available other
than re-naming document in "save as" option. Does not happen with other
documents but this one -- and it is most important document I most frequently
work on. HELP!
