Word 2003 reads wrong picture size

Hello,

Here at work, we just noticed that Word 2003 does not correctly read
the size of a jpeg picture that is inserted in Word.

The size of the picture is reported in Photoshop as 5,6 cm x 7,46 cm at
250dpi. Which is exactly what we want.

However, when the pictures is inserted in Word 2003, it is sized much
bigger and when the size is checked (Format picture - Size), it reports
that the 100% size corresponds to 19,44 cm x 25,89 cm. Of course this
is completely wrong.

The reason we discoverd this is because jpeg pictures were linked in a
Word document created in Word 2000. When the document was opened in
Word 2003 and an update of all fields was performed (ctrl-A, F9) or
printed, all pictures resized to 100% which according to Word 2003 was
larged than it should be.

The bottom line is that this makes it impossible to interchange files
between Word 2000 and Word 2003 and be sure that the pictures keep the
same size.

Anybody knows the reason and solution for all this?
thanks
Ward

Hi Ward,

If you check the JPEG properties in a graphics
program is the 250 PPI value saved within the
graphic? If not, Word will use the Pixel Per Inch
conversion value in Tools=>Options=>General=>Web Options=>Pictures
on graphics that are inserted.

The size you're getting would tend to indicate that
the optional PPI value isn't stored in the graphic and
that the Picture value is set at 72. You can type in
250 in the Picture value then double click on one of the
graphics in the file (or use Format=>Picture) and see if
reseting the graphic at that point gives you the expected size.

Hello Bob,

Thanks for your answer. However, when we check the resolution in
Photoshop or PaintShopPro, both programs report that the reolsution is
250dpi. So, yes, I guess the resolution is stored in the jpeg file.
Word 2003 just seems to ignore it.

Note that Word 2000 correctly reads the jpeg file and does not give any
problems.

Hi Ward,

Try opening the graphic in a utility such as
http://www.irfanview.com and looking at the
picture information screen.

My guess is that the setting you're seeing is
that of the graphic app rather than in the
graphic itself, or that you're using a progressive
JPEG which isn't supported.

The settings for the Pixels per Inch in Word 2000
didn't affect quite as many things as the 2002 and 2003
versions do.

What happened if you changed the setting in Word 2003
then used format picture and [Reset] the size?

Hello Bob,

I tried what you suggested.

Irfanview showed, confirming what Photoshop and PaintShopPro told me,
that the picture was 250 dpi (actually, Irfanview reported "resolution:
250x250 DPI" (I didn't know resolution can be different for the two
dimensions) )

When I changed the pixels per inch settings in the Web options,
strangly enough the image did not report the correct size now (which
was what I had expected), even after inserting the image again and
applying 'reset'.

In PaintShopPro the file format is defined as JPEG-JFIF compliant,
version 1, Hufmann standard.

But indeed... when I resaved it (as standard instead of progressive),
the size was imported correctly. However, saving again in progressive
left it correctly.
So somehow, the JPEG format of the original file must be some strange
format not correctly recognized by Word 2003. Word 2000 does not seem
to struggle with it.

Conclusion: JPEG and Word 2003 -> you don't know what you're going to
get. Very annoying!!!

thanks for your help and effort,
Ward
