Word 2003 "save as" is glacial!

I recently purchased and upgraded to Office 2003 (was using Office
97 apps). Now whenever I do a "save as" in Word, I get a bunch of
hard-drive churn before it will let me choose a file folder for my
file. Makes the process very herky-jerky and it is very annoying,
also entirely consistent unfortunately. I can see and hear that
the drive is doing something, it looks like it is emptying a cache
or something.

I thought perhaps this meant that Office 2003 had installed that
old accursed resident "Fast Find" thing but I can't find any trace
of it, neither in my startup folder nor in my startup list using
msconfig. This is all on Windows XP Home SP2 fully updated.

The previous version of Word didn't do this, and no hardware has
changed. I installed it on a second computer just to test and got
the exact same annoying results. Anybody know what's going on and
how I fix it? Thanks.
