Word 2003 Save As types

P

Paramesh

I have installed Word 2003 in 2 machines. In one machine, in the "Save As
type" combo box in the Save As dialog box, I have an item "Word 97-2002 &
6.0/95 -RTF (*.doc)". But in the other machine, I see "Word 97-2000 & 6.0/95
-RTF (*.doc)" in its place. What is this difference due to?

The dialog comes from the registry -
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\Text Converters\Import
and is associated with the particular version of the RTF import filter
installed at the time (or what was already installed on an updated machine).
The filters have been subject to change by security updates.

I wouldn't worry too much about this, unless you are having difficulty
opening old files on one or other of these platforms.

Hi,

I have a related question. I noticed that Word 2003 does not have 'Save As
Type' Word 6.0/95. Is there a way I can save my Word document as Word 6.0/95.
Word 6.0/95 files are much smaller in size and that matters above all else as
we work over the network with large word documents.

Can I move a convertor file in place and edit registry settings to get the
'Save as Type' to appear in Word 2003?

Inputs are highly appreciated!

I found the file size increasing even more than the original file size when I
saved using the option 'Word 97-2003 and 6.0/95 RTF'

For instance a 8 MB file went to 9 MB when I saved as 'Word 97-2003 and
6.0/95 RTF'. Earlier when I had Word 2000, I'd managed to Save As Word 6.0/95
file of approx 2 MB. ( As I remember, I managed to get that option in my Save
As Type list in Word 2000 with a little help from you, Suzanne!)

Did you ever get a solution to the Word 6.0/95 converter?

I have two machines running Word 2003 (same patches, etc) and one has the
Word 6.0/95 converter and one doesn't. Of course it's my machine that has the
converter (and I probably downloaded and ran something, but what?).

Any info would help

Thanks

Leon

P.S. Yes, tried the "Word 97-2003 and 6.0/95 RTF" option and it changed my
144KB file into over 3000KB.

The old Word 6 converter and the registry patch that makes it available is
linked from the downloads page of my web site.

Thanks for your prompt reply

Yes, had already grabbed it from your web site - believe it or not the user
did not like the "- old filter" in the name of the converter - "didn't look
authentic, not like the old machine" - but thanks heaps anyway

You can edit the registry entry to remove ' -old filter'. I added that as I
have both filters and it makes it easier to identify which you are using.
