Word 2003 save greyed out

I've been using Word 2003 for years, and suddenly yesterday I can only save a
document when exiting the program. The Save button and save option in the
dropdown File menu are greyed out. Also, my cut, copy, and paste buttons and
options are greyed out. In addition, can't Undo or Redo.

Have you installed any new software or updates that embed themselves into
Word (Office) such as Acrobat, an OCR or similar utility? What happens if
you you fire up Word in Safe Mode? From Start | Run (Winkey+R), type in

winword /a

and press enter. Word will start in Safe Mode. Are the Save, Cut & Paste
commands back?
