Word 2003 - Slow

Can anyone help me get Word working faster. It's slow opening up and closing
down files, it's taking ages and it's getting worse. I need it sorting as it
affecting my self employed typing job. I've tried all the normal stuff, like
removing unwanted programmes, preventing uncessary start-ups, cleared hard
disk, done a defrag, etc.

Help please !

Perhaps the problem is the harddrive itself. Has the computer startup
time increased from what it used to be? what about opening other programs?

Has this machine ever been part of a network where drives were mapped to the
network? If so and the drives are no longer available, unmap the drives
that are not available.

Excel, Powerpoint open and close quickly. A word document can take up to 7
secs to load, a document already saved about the same and to close a word
document down it is taking almost 2 minutes. The hard drive is whirring a
lot of the time

If you do a time check you will notice that the slowness probably started
after the April updates. I hear this complaint from several other users.
