Word 2003- sluggish/crashing in "save as" dialog

When I open a new document and then save it, it locks up when clicking
the down arrow (the the right of "Save in:" to navigate to the save
location. This is affecting Word and other office apps (excel
specifically), and is not an issue when logging into a another account
on the machine.

I have installed all pertinent Office updates (Office SP2) and it is
fully up to date. Does anyone have an idea what might be happening or
how to fix this?

Right-click on the My Computer icon on the Windows desktop,
left-click on Disconnect Network Drive, and disconnect any mapped
drives that are not currently available.
