Word 2003 SP1 getting insufficient memory error

Word comes up with an insufficient memory error whenever opening a document
named ".doc" (no spaces or anything). I have found the Windows XP GUI will
not allow me to make a file with just the extention, but CMD.EXE will. Try
it, even empty documents will bomb.
