Word 2003 SP2 still has problem with hyperlink to network share

I posted this problem in the general discussion a few days ago and got no
response. I figure maybe it belonged here. I'd cross-reference the posts, but
there doesn't seem to be a way to do that in the Microsoft web newsreader.

My Word 2003 is updated with SP2 (or so it says in Help | About... --
11.6568.6568). Using this under Windows XP Pro SP1.

Situation is:

I have a document saved on a network share. I want to insert a
hyperlink to a file on a different share on the same server. If I use
<CTRL>-K and browse to the desired file, I get the
"file:///\\server\share\..." link and when I <CTRL>-click on it, it works
fine.

UNTIL I SAVE THE DOCUMENT. When I reopen the document, I see hyperlink
text like "\...\...\...\folder\etc." (the "..." are literally there). When I
<CTRL>-click on this, I get the message mentioned in the KB article, "The
address of this site is not valid. Check the address and try again."

Apparently, it has converted the link to a relative reference. There doesn't
seem to be any way to force it to save an absolute reference. (By the way, I
don't want to specify a different hyperlink base, I just want an absolute
reference!)

KB Article 890474 states that this was a recognized problem and was fixed in
SP2. So why am I still having this problem?

Thanks!

hello vklrc,

I've had the same problem and it is easy to fix: go to "extras -->
options --> generell". at the lower right corner has to be the button
"weboptions". click on the index card "datas" and there you have to
reset "save links at refresh". now you get absolut adress.

greets, Mo

Just to clarify, I found that Mo's idea worked, except that in my version of
Word, the sequence is:

Tools -> Options -> General -> Web Options... -> Files

Make sure "Update links on save" is _not_ checked.

I'm not happy about this, but it works.

In my opinion, absolute URLs should not be updated, period. That's why
they're there!

And it still suggests that the problem mentioned in KB Article 890474 was
_not_ fixed.

Oh, well.
