Word 2003 Startup Task Pane and PDFMaker

Everytime I open up Word 2003, the startup task pane and
PDFMaker toolbar are open. I disabled the startup task
pane in tools/options/view menu and I disabled the
PDFMaker toolbar in view/toolbars/pdfmaker. After I
uncheck the box to disbale the startup task pane, it
still remains. The only way to close it is by pressing
the x on the pane itself. Then, it disappears. When I
close Word and re-open it, the startup task pane and the
PDFMaker are open again. Word is not saving the changes
I am making. Any ideas?

I did not say I had answered it. IIRC, someone else had posted an answer,
but this was many days ago, and I have no idea now.
