Word 2003 stops responding when try to browse for file - why?

I've never experienced this - but when opening or attempting to save a Word
file and I hit the pull down arrow the program freezes and when checked it
says program is not responding. Any ideas?

Right-click on the My Computer icon on the Windows desktop,
left-click on Disconnect Network Drive, and disconnect any mapped
drives that are not currently available.

I did unmap all my drives and let a script map at login. Still have the
same problem, both in Word and Excel. Anything I can try?
