Word 2003 Styles problem

In Word 2000, our company created a simple template (from a pre-existing
document that contained undesireable numbered list styles). We cleaned up
the undesireable style components by adjusting tab stops, First Line, Hanging
and Left Indents, etc., so that our template contained only the corrected
number list styles. This was done so that, using the Organizer, styles from
this template could be copied over (and thus replace) undesireable styles in
an existing document. This process worked well to rid unwanted styles from
those documents.

Recently, we upgraded to Office 2003. The above process, however, no longer
seems to have an affect on the existing documents. They seem to retain the
same number list style characteristics as were present prior to the template
styles being copied over. Is there a setting I can make to solve this?

Hundreds of documents are affected, and while this might seem trivial, it's
a problem that needs a solution. Thank you for any suggestions you may have!

I would recommend saving your template as a text file, opening it in
notepad, copying the text into a new template and set up your numbering in
