Word 2003 text form field Help text fails to appear

I've encountered an odd error and can't find anything (so far) that indicates
it's a known problem.

I'm updating some templates for a client and they need user contextual
support for a bunch of text form fields. The simple answer would be to add
some basic Help text, to appear either on the status bar or if F1 is pressed.

I've added the appropriate text in both tabs of the Properties for a given
text form field but nothing shows. I've checked the settings and the status
bar is set to show and it does, but no Help text appears. I'm down to one
word and still nothing!

Is this a known problem?

Word version is 2003 (11.8307.8221) SP3, running under XP Pro 2002 SP 2.
It's a corporate environment and IT are way behind the curve in some respects
so this may already be fixed in the outside world :)...

Grateful for anyone's thoughts.

The cause turned out to be a corrupt image. Once IT had re-imaged the drive,
the error went away (and so did a few others that, it seems, were related).
