Word 2003 TOC numbering resets when attaching to e-mail

Simon

Hi,

I wonder if anybody can help me with this problem. We are finding that the
Table of Contents numbering (of Word 2003 documents) is resetting when the
file it sent via e-mail. Infact they reset as soon as the file is attached
to the mail (Outlook 2003 on XP)

Updating the table numbers does sort the problem, but it rather annoying.

Thanks

Hi Simon,

What numbering is it that is changing? The page numbers? If it is
changing, it is probably because the unchanged numbering does not reflect
the correct numbering and I would have thought that you would want it to be
correct. Is that not the case.

If you don't want it to change, select the table of contents and use
Ctrl+Shift+F9 to Unlink the Table of Contents, or Ctrl+F11 to lock it
(Ctrl+Shift+F11 will unlock it if you later want to update it).

Thanks for the reply Doug.

What I have got is a 25 page document with 8 sections, which follows our
report section numbering. All the page numbers are correct, and he table of
contents looks like this (sorry for the formatting):

SUMMARY 1
1. INTRODUCTION 1.1
1.2 Scope of Work 1.3
2. SCOPE OF WORK AND BASE DATA 2.1
2.1 Data Base 2.5
3. TECHNICAL ASSESSMENT 3.1
4. PROJECT SHEDULE 4.1
4.1 Conclusions 4.2
4.2 Recommendations 4.5
5. COST ASSESSMENT 5.1
6. CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS 6.1
7. REFERENCES 7.1
8. APPENDICES 8.1
A. APPENDIX A A.1
B. APPENDIX B B.1
C. APPENDIX C C.1
D. APPENDIX D D.1

The problem is that as soon as I attach the Word document to an e-mail the
ToC looks like this:

SUMMARY 3
1. INTRODUCTION 1.3
1.2 Scope of Work 1.3
2. SCOPE OF WORK AND BASE DATA 2.3
2.1 Data Base 2.3
3. TECHNICAL ASSESSMENT 3.3
4. PROJECT SHEDULE 4.3
4.1 Conclusions 4.3
4.2 Recommendations 4.3
5. COST ASSESSMENT 5.3
6. CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS 6.3
7. REFERENCES 7.3
8. APPENDICES 8.3
A. APPENDIX A A.3
B. APPENDIX B B.3
C. APPENDIX C C.3
D. APPENDIX D D.3

All the page numbers still show correctly, its just the ToC that ends up
with three for every line. An F9 does sort it out.

Thanks

Simon
