Word 2003 toolbar customization won't stay

Each time I customize the toolbars in Word 2003, the changes are lost when
the application is closed.
These are not new custom toobars, just changes to the default toolbars.

Have not had this problem with Excel and FrontPage 2003, just Word 2003.

Any assistance would be appreciated.
