Word 2003 tries to access diskette at startup

1. Insert a diskette in A:.
2. Start Word 2003 (SP1 installed).
3. Save a document to diskette A.
4. Exit Word.
5. Remove the diskette.
6. Start Word.
Word will now try to access A: and it never gives up.
You are forced to have diskette inserted to be able to start Word!

Your original mistake was in saving a document to a removable disk, which is
a prescription for document corruption. Never work on a file directly from a
floppy or save directly to a floppy. Always copy the file from the floppy to
the HD before editing and reverse the process when editing is complete (save
the file to the HD, then copy to the floppy).

I normally work on the hard drive or the network.
In this case I first save the document on my HD and selected File / Save as
in Word and saved it on the floppy.
I moved the floppy to an old computer with no network connection, open it
with Word 97 and saved it on that HD.

Word 97 has no problems with saving documents on floppy.

Well to repeat Suzanne's advice, NEVER save or open directly from a floppy.
Always COPY to and from the floppy.

Meanwhile, if you clear your MRU File Cache, the search for the floppy will
probably go. Use Tools, Options, General, set the MRU list to zero and then
close Word (and Outlook if it is open). Now restart Word and try File, Open
and it shouldn't hunt for the floppy any more. Reset your MRU file cache to
9 again.

Thanks for the excellent explanation about the MRU, but I already know that
solution.

The main problem is that Word 2003 (and Excel 2003) has this problem and
normal users cannot solve it by them self.

Remove or lock out their floppy drives so that they cannot be used any more
which will resolve their problems. They shouldn't be saving or opening from
a floppy and if they insist on doing it, take the drive away.

Word 97 also has problems saving to floppies. You just have been lucky so
far. Working (at all) with a floppy drive from within Word is one of the
best ways to lose your document. This means opening, editing, saving, or
even printing!
