Word 2003 will not start, Active X control program file damaged

When I try to start Word it will not run. I will get the little box that
shows that it is licenced to me, but that is as far as it will go. It will
start up in safe mode.

All the other Office 2003 programs will start and run properly.
I started having problems with it when I tried to download templates from
the office site.

When I looked in my downloaded program files I found that the Active X
control program file is listed as damaged. Is this causing the problem? Can
I delete the file without damaging anything? Or could it be caused by
something else?

My operating system is XP Professional.

Try renaming your normal.dot template as described in
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/ProbsOpeningWord.htm . I don't
believe the ActiveX problem is related.
