word 2003 with XP OS......cannot open files

I installed Office 2003 Professional on my XP machine. All
of the applications work perfectly on my username, but
when I switch users no apps will open files. The
message "The File _____ is not available" appears. Oddly,
documents can be created and saved, but cannot be re-
opened.

I was focusing on the new software as the culprit, but I
wonder if this is an OS problem. Any ideas on how to get
my fancy new Office Suite to work for all users on this XP
system?

In previous versions, this message is caused by a conflict with the Norton
Office Plug-in. You can disable the plug-in without compromising your virus
protection provided you leave Auto-Protect enabled.

I'm having the same problem and it seems like Norton is
the problem. How do you disable the plug-in as you have
suggested? Thanks

1. Open Norton AntiVirus (right-click on the Taskbar icon and choose this
option).

2. Click on the Options button at the top of the dialog.

3. In the Options dialog, click on Miscellaneous (menu on the left)

4. Clear the check box for "Enable Office Plug-in."

5. OK out and close NAV.

Here is Office MVP Beth Melton's reply:

If Norton AV was installed at one time then the DLL for the Office
Plug-in could still be registered.

Search for : officeav.dll

If you find it then go to Start/Run and run the following command:

regsvr32 /u "<path>\officeav.dll"

Here is a KB article that provides a few additional details. It does
not include information on Norton CE but it will contain additional
details on the unregister command if you need them:
