Word 2003 won't open and uses 99 percent of cpu

I have the new release of word. When I click to start
word nothing happens, when I check my task manager I see
that winword.exe is there, but quickly goes on to consume
99% of my cpu utlization. The file size is 72k. I can't
even kill it from the task manager. I have done the
obvious things such as disable norton antivirus, tried
repair, tried uninstalling and re-installing the office
suite but the same occurs everytime. At the moment I
have un-installed the word portion of the suite, so that
it does not get started by accident.

Word was working fine until I tried to send a large
document from powerpoint to word using the File-->Send To-
->word. After a while it hung and I had to turn off my
machine because winword would not die.

Does anyone have a suggestion for me to try?

Jean

Does the problem only occur when opening Word by double clicking a particular file (which may be the problem), or when
you launch it without a doc associated to it?

It happens on both occasions, even when I use outlook and
in the background it start's a word session, and there it
goes back to 99%.

That's a strange situation.
Whenever I see something wierd with Word, the first thing I'd try is to rename normal.dot - then relaunch to see if the problem
goes away. Give that a try.

If the problem still occurs, the problem may be a driver of 3rd party app causing interference.
You can test this by booting into Windows safe mode (restart your computer, then tap the F8 key while beginning to reboot). If
the problem does not occur in safe mode, it's interference from another app or a driver.
Reboot the computer again to get back into normal mode.

Sorry I couldn't pinpoint the problem. We're stuck with general troubleshooting on this one.
