Word 2003 won't open Documents in Folders

I have newly installed Word 2003 on brand new computers - no previous
versions of Office were running. They are running XPPro.

When I try to open a document by double clicking on it in a folder Word
opens but there is no document open - just the background screen.

There are no error messages.

I can open the same document by going to file-->open or by clicking on the
open shortcut on the toolbar. The document opens successfully using this
method.

The same thing occurs in Excel. It may happen in other office programs, but
I have not tried it yet.

Try running Detect and Repair under the Help menu from any of the Office
Applications.
