Word 2003 won't open. leaves transparent window on screen

I click on my Word 2003 icon. Window instantly pops up on screen, but then
just sits there. Hourglass remains in Word window, but arrow shows on rest of
screen. Also, can't open Word documents in Documents. Removed and reinstalled
program and updates a couple of times but same problem remains. Any body see
this situation previously? What should I do? Thank you.

Yes, I'm having the exact same problem. The reply I got was unhelpful. It

Have you tried opening Word in Safe Mode? Either start it with the /a switch
or press Ctrl while it is loading.

I have just experienced a similar problem on a new system with a trial
version of Office 2003-Exact same symptoms for Word- the other elements
of office work fine. I uninstalled and replaced with XP 2002 it worked
a few times then did the same thing-so I uninstalled and tried Office
2000. It wouldn't even work once.
I'm getting messages about potentially corrupt MAPI32.dll, and some
other installer messages.
2002 works fine on my other computer.
