Word 2003 won't open

I have a user who began experiencing errors recently when he would try to
open a Word document, or Word itself. There doesn't seem to be any obvious
reason which caused this, such as new software installation or driver
changes.
The symptom are as follows: When he tries to open a document, he gets the
following error:

Word has encountered a problem and needs to close.

This message has the Send Error Report/ Don't Send buttons.
After choosing one of these, the following message appears:

Word failed to start corrrectly last time. Starting Word in Safe Mode.....
Do you want to Start Word in Safe Mode?

If you choose No, then you go through the cycle again. The only way out is
to choose Yes and open Word in Safe Mode, which works, and he is able to view
documents.

The following error is generated in the Application Event Viewer:

All other Office programs work fine.
So far, I have tried:

1- A repair installation of Office
2- A Reinstallation of Office
3- Uninstall and Reinstall of Office, with SP 3 and all updates
4- Applying XP Pro SP3 to this machine.

All to no effect. If anyone has any notion what is going on, I would greatly
appreciate the help.

Anne,

Thanks for the reply. I must sheepishly admit that right after this posting
I did a search and found that website metioned numerous times. Once I renamed
normal.dot, all was good. Thanks again.
