Word 2003 XML elements and Paragraphs

I'm trying to markup a word document with XML.

I am not able to put in a new paragraph character (i.e., the
inverted-P) inside XML elements if the element does not enclose a
whole paragraph.

I also notice that I have this problem only when for the XML elements
that have the "purple-filled" markup - as opposed to the
"grey-filled".

Is there a solution/patch/KB article/workaround for this ?

I'm using Office 2003 Professional (11.5604.5606).
