DO you have Norton Anti Virus? If so, disable the Office Plugin option in
NAV.

: why I can not open word 2002 document. I get Word was
: unable to read this document

I have NAV, but plug-in cannot be disabled. The corporate
edition comes with lot of locked options.
Also, I see similar problems:
Have XP SP-2 and Office SP-3.

The version number for all programs are :
Excel - V 2002 (10.6501.6626) SP3 "unable to read file"
but exits cleanly.
Word - V 2002 (10.6501.6626) SP3 "The <file name> not
available"; on exit "The file <Normal> already exists. Do
you want to replace the existing file?" when
clicked "Yes" exits, "No" gives "Save As" dialog.
Other programs like Outlook, Publisher seem to behave
fine.
Any help is appreciated.

Hi, mu_100_pack. Search for the OFFICEAV.DLL file on your system
(include hidden and system files/folders) and note the directory path
where it is located. Close all open applications. From Windows, click
on Start | Run. In the Open dialog box, type the command (including
quotes):

Regsvr32 -U "C:\<path>\OfficeAV.dll"

Replace <path> with the directory path for your OfficeAV.dll file. Click
on OK. You only have to run this command once (not every time you
restart your computer). You should get the message:
"DllUnregisterServer in C:\<path>\OfficeAV.dll succeeded." Does that
work?

Hi garfield-n-odie,
I think you are trying to give me a way to replace the NAV
hooks into the office products. Although, I have not tried
it, (though I may inspite of the dangers of loosing the
system altogether - I am prone to do just that!!), I would
like to continue using NAV. That is the only protection I
have against viruses. What did MS change to make this not
work anymore? Does Symantec have a fix for it? Should it
come from corp IT depts?

This is a NAV problem and nothing to do with MS. Just scroll this one
section of the newsgroup and you will find hundreds of problems all caused
by the Office Plugin in NAV. Even users who have had a trial version of NAV
supplied with their computers which they uninstalled and used something
better find that the OFFICEAV.DLL is still present and registered in
Windows. What garfield-n-oldie has given you is a way to unregister the
troublesome dll.

Hi, mu_100_pack. I am not suggesting that you totally disable Norton
Antivirus. If you only disable the Norton AntiVirus for Microsoft
Office plug-in, then the Office plug-in will not scan Office documents
when you open them. Even if the Norton AntiVirus for Office plug-in is
disabled, the Norton AntiVirus Auto-Protect feature still provides
ongoing protection by scanning any file that you run, download, open,
create, or delete. If you have the resources of a corporate IT
department at your disposal, you should have contacted them first before
posting here. Symantec is aware of this incompatibility problem with
Microsoft Office and does offer fixes for some versions of Norton
Antivirus... I presumed you or your corporate IT department already
installed all such fixes. You should not blindly following advice from
strangers, and some of the advice posted in these Microsoft newsgroups
is indeed very bad. But as TF says, this is a common problem, and if
you had done the tiniest bit of research in this newsgroup before
posting, you would see that what I suggested is the usual solution for
users of NAV Corporate Edition. You can follow my suggestion or not...
either way, I'm done with you. Plonk.

Hi TF and garfield-n-oldie,
Thanks for your candid replies. I would just do what you
suggested. I was merely trying to get more info and/or see
if there is an alternate solution (because my own track
record of messing up simplest installation jobs).
Thanks again.

Hi TF and garfield-n-oldie,
Thanks to your encouragement I did apply the procedure
and it did work. Now I'll have to work with IT to get the
update from Symantec. But that is another battle for
another day.
Thanks again for all the help. I did not mean antagonize
anyone, but ....
