Word 2004 ALWAYS crashes when imbedding a hyperlink

I ran across this fine forum while Googling "office 2004 word insert
hyperlink crash". Virtually every-time I try to imbed a hyperlink into
a word or phrase, WORD crashes and I get that silly notification-to-
Microsoft message and then WORD reboots and gives me a new document
with that contemptible flashing curser. Em addresses and URLs are
activated when one hits return at the end of the HTML but it would be
nice to be able to imbed the HTML. This is 2008 and I've been
suffering with this since 2005. Any help or advice would be greatly
appreciated. Aloha from Honolulu!

I'm running OS 10.4.1 on:
Machine Name: Power Mac G5
Machine Model: PowerMac7,3
CPU Type: PowerPC G5 (3.1)
Number Of CPUs: 2
CPU Speed: 2.7 GHz
L2 Cache (per CPU): 512 KB
Memory: 5.5 GB
Bus Speed: 1.35 GHz
Boot ROM Version: 5.2.4f1

You haven't given the Service Pack level for your copy of Word.

The first thing I would o is to make sure that it is fully updated. Go to
Help:About in Entourage. You should be at version 11.5.2.

--Hi and thanks for the message. This is my firt time to use this messageboard and I hope I've replied to the group as requested.

My WORD is version 11.5.0 and that's the latest update I found. There
is an 11.5.2 which I have installed but that's not for the WORD
program; for EXCEL I think (the update went by too fast to see all
updates but I did not see a WORD update). The problem persists.

Hi Scott;

Unless it's a typo in your op you're *way* behind on OS X updates - the post
says 10.4.1, but 10.4.11 is current. If you haven't gotten there yet I'd
suggest you do so. I can't say it's the cause but it may be a contributing
factor. Use the Combo Update from the Apple Downloads site [In fact, it
wouldn't hurt to do so even if you're at 10.4.11 but used the Apple Software
Update to get there - the Combos are much more reliable.]:

By way of explanation, not all program version numbers are changed when you
update Office. If there isn't an application-specific revision the version
number for that app will remain the same. That's the case with the 11.5.1 &
11.5.2 updates... Word will still reveal 11.5.0 in the About Word panel.
However, there are a number of other Office components on which each program
relies & they may very well be modified radically by any given update.

For confirmation of your current status go to ~\Applications\Microsoft
Office 2004\Updater Logs where you'll find a record of the updates which
have been applied. You should see 11.5.0, 11.5.1 & 11.5.2 in that list.

After the updating run Disk Utility - Repair Disk Permissions, shut down for
a minute or two & see if things improve on the new startup. FWIW, I'm
running 11.5.2 in Tiger (10.4.11) on a Dual 2GHz G5 not experiencing the
problem you cited.

Thanks again Bob. It was indeed a typo; my current OS is 10.4.11.
Sorry! I'm 65 and mistakes are beginning to show up ;->

I checked the log file as you so kindly suggested and 11.5.0, 11.5.1 &
11.5.2 are indeed there. I've had this problem from the day I
installed the original registered WORD 2004 from disc on this
excellent Mac G5. Any other thoughts?

You REALLY seem to know the technology. If I may be so bold, what is
your field?

I'm what one might call an "early adaptor power user" re technology
and have been a "user" since the mid-1960s (Univac in the Air Force).
I in fact grew up playing with punch cards. My late mother was a
civilian computer programmer with the Air Force from WW II into the
1950s! Thanks again for your kind assistance. Regards - Scott Foster,
