Word 2004 Audio Notes Feature

I use Microsoft Word Mac on my MacBook with OS 10.5.2 and have had a lot of
trouble with the audio notes feature. It doesn't work. Every time I've tried
to use it it seems to be recording just fine and then when I tell it to stop
I get the pinwheel as if it is compiling the stuff it just recorded, but then
it freezes up my Mac and I have to do a hard reboot. All of the Apple support
says that it is a problem with Word. I have downloaded all of the patches and
updates that I can find for it. What can I do?
