Word 2004 Auto-Correct Library?

M

Marc Wielage

Word 2004 has a long list of misspelled words that it wants to automatically
correct. While I appreciate the feature, I'd like to defeat most of it,
because I prefer to correct my own mistakes myself, or in a final review and
spell-check.

Is there a way I can quickly delete all of the items in the list of
Auto-Corrected words?

Again, this is Office 2004 for Mac OSX, under OSX 10.3.4.

Hi Marc,

Just turn off the spell check feature! You'll find it in Preferences>
Spelling & Grammar. Or maybe it's this option that you want to turn off
(it's not clear): Tools> AutoCorrect> "Replace text as you type". (The
latter setting isn't as sticky as it should be and you may have to uncheck
it again periodically.)

If you actually want to get rid of the AutoCorrect list, which is something
altogether different from misspelled words, post back. But I don't think
that's what you mean.

That's exactly what I want. Where's the list of words kept? How can I
delete them in one swell foop, rather than one at a time?

The list is the Microsoft Office ACL [English] file in
~Library/Preferences/Microsoft folder.

I do not think you can edit the list as you do a custom/exclude dictionary,
but I could be wrong. You could Send Feedback (under Help) to request an
editable text list, unless someone corrects me soon.

You can turn the feature off entirely in the Tools | AutoCorrect dialog.
Uncheck "replace text as you type."
Unchecking "use suggestions from spellchecker" may help also.
Or you can find and delete individual entries in the same dialog.

But it can make more sense to turn it to your own ends by entering your
common mistakes and personal abbreviations, more info:

Marc,

You can't delete the AutoCorrect terms that come with Word other than the
laborious way -- one by one. (That's in Word 2001, but I doubt that 2004 is
any different -- I'll be finding out next week when I get my copy.)

It takes about 20 minutes to delete all, or almost all, of the entries. When
you have done so, back up the Microsoft Office ACL [English] file just in
case you want an empty one in future.

The great advantage of investing in this 20 minutes is that it's much
easier, once you have accumulated a list of your own AutoCorrect terms, to
check whether you made one up earlier, and what it is -- because your list
will be *much* shorter than one that includes the default terms.

Happy deleting!

--- SOME TIPS THAT MIGHT BE USEFUL ---
* WAIT FOR CONSIDERED ADVICE: If you post a question, keep re-visiting the
newsgroup for several days after the first response comes in. Sometimes it
takes a few responses before the best or complete solution is proposed;
sometimes you'll be asked for further information so that a better answer
can be provided. Good tips about getting the best out of posting are at
http://word.mvps.org/FindHelp/Posting.htm

* QUERY GOOGLE FIRST: Before posting your next question, search Google
Groups
(http://groups.google.com/advanced_group_search?q=group:*mac.office.word) --
the topic may have been comprehensively answered already.

* THE MS NEWS SERVER IS QUICKEST: If you connect directly to the Microsoft
news server (msnews.microsoft.com), you will see your replies within
minutes; going through your ISP's news server could take much longer, and
web-based access can also be slow -- up to several days. For info on
settings to do this, see the notes at
http://entourage.mvps.org/help/start.html#Anchor-newsgroup

* POST TO THE NEWSGROUP TO GIVE YOUR FEEDBACK: Please post all comments or
follow-on questions to the newsgroup for the benefit of others who may be
interested. If you need to send an e-mail to me directly (although that
would be exceptional), remove the uppercase letters from my address above.
E-mails with attachments are automatically rejected.

* YOUR VIEWS ARE WELCOME: If you know the answer, even a partial one, to a
question you see on this newsgroup, feel free to jump in and answer it --
there's no monopoly on answering here, and we're all volunteers!

* COMING BACK PAYS DIVIDENDS: I've found there's no better way of improving
my knowledge of Word than visiting this newsgroup. Notes I've compiled from
ideas at this newsgroup and elsewhere, which include other sources of
information about Word, are downloadable free at
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/WordMac/Bend/BendWord.htm

* BACK UP NOW: If anyone is still reading down this far, here's a question:
if your settings files were corrupted right now, would you have an
up-to-date backup? It's best to back up your Normal template and all your
Word settings files on a medium other than the internal hard drive and, if
you also want to protect against theft and fire, to store them in a
different building.
