Word 2004: bulleting problem

I only rarely encountered this as a fluke with Word X, but now see
this quite often in Word 2004:

If I have a document and insert a bullet point, Word bullets every
preceding line in the document. If I undo, the line I wanted bulleted
appears as desired. I can reproduce this with new documents, and also
have "apply bulleted lists" off in AutoFormat. Any suggestions?

You have "Automatically update" set in your Normal style (or whichever
style you're using). Choose Format/Style and click Modify. Uncheck the
automatically update checkbox.
