Word 2004 - Cannot use New Label option

R

Rudy Kohut

Word 2004 - version 11.2.3

Open a blank new document.
Go to -> Tools/Labels and choose "Label Options...".
Click on "New Label".
Design a new label sheet.

I can't get the "OK" button to activate even though it sits there slowly
'winking' its Aqua Blue eye at me! Keyboard and mouse not effective. The
'Cancel" button works OK though!

Any thoughts on this? Can others duplicate this?

Running OS10.4.6.

Thanks

Hi Rudy,

Not me, but I'm in OS 10.3.9 which might make a difference.

For me, the OK button is active when the New Custom label dialog opens and
it remains active as I change things. When you first open this dialog, is
the OK button grayed out? Or does it happen after you make particular
changes?

As I said in my posting, the OK button is 'active' but doesn't get activated
when I click on it or hit 'return' to save it. Never gets greyed out; just
doesn't do anything!

FWIW, I'm also using Word 2004 (11.2.3) in OS X 10.4.6, and I can't
duplicate this behaviour. The OK button works just fine for me.

I couldn't duplicate it in Word 2004/OS 10.4.6, but haven't applied 11.2.3
yet.

The Label dialog does call on the Normal template to make a new sheet, so I
would suggest first testing a fresh Normal template, instructions here:
http://word.mvps.org/mac/MacWordNormal.html

I don't think, by the way, that hitting return is supposed to work--I never
get a focus on the OK button that means return will trigger it by default.

Thanks for all the advice but here is the answer to my problem.

I realised that I had made an error in the dimensions of the labels so that
one of the totals was bigger than the sheet dimension. However, Word gave me
no hint at all that this was an error - it just sat there impassively,
giving away nothing! It must do internal error checking in order for it to
refuse to save but why doesn't it alert the user?

Cheers everyone!

It *does* alert me. "The dimensions you have entered will result in a label
that is larger than the selected sheet. Are you sure you want to continue?"

I got that when fiddling around trying to reproduce your problem :)

Cheers

Try having all the dimensions of the labels as correct but then change the
number of labels (vertical) to more than the page would normally allow. I
*don't* get any alert for that error.
Thanks

Perhaps you *do* get the error message, but it's sitting off the edge
of the screen? There are various threads on solving this (getting tool
bars back onto the screen, that type of thing). Maybe someone with a
better memory than me can point you in the right direction for this.

Sorry to have to say so, but I've tried every incorrect setting I can and
get an error message appropriate to each problem. The one you specified in
your last post:

produces a message which reads:

"The margins, label size, and number across or down values produce a page
that is larger than the label page size."

Please understand that nobody is saying you *aren't* having the problem,
only that we are unable to *reproduce* it. Since we're dealing with an
uncommon situation, attempting to replicate the error is a part of the
troubleshooting process. Unless we can determine what is causing the problem
we can't offer any constructive suggestions :)

Have you previously used the feature in a similar way without a problem?

Have you possibly installed any new add-ins, updates or other software since
then that might be responsible for the situation?

Do you recall what specific measurements & dimensions you had used when the
issue occurred?
