Word 2004 crashing on startup

Version: 2004
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: Intel

Suddenly, Word 2004 crashes immediately: if I try to open an existing document and if I open it and open a new word document from the gallery. Excel does work.

I simplified my fonts collection and deleted the word plist and a few Word Preferences files in my user Preferences folder. Repaired permissions.
Restarted computer. Here's the crash report for Apple that comes up.

Hi Karyn -

I'm not particularly astute at interpreting crash logs but it does appear to
be more of a system error than a Word error. My first step would be to start
up the Mac from the OS X install disk & run Disk Utility - Repair Disk [not
repair disk permissions]. If any errors are found run the utility again
until it reports to be error free. I doubt that will be the total fix,
however so...

If that doesn't resolve it go to the Apple Downloads site & get the Leopard
10.5.4 COMBO updater as well as any other hardware/firmware updates that may
be available for your breed of Mac. Additionally there is one more Office
update you appear to be missing (11.5.1) so get that applied next. Repair
permissions afterward & restart.

Let us know how you make out.

OK. I ran Disk Utility and Hardware Check. I reinstalled Mac OSX latest version. I reinstalled Word and applied all updates. I cleaned all my font caches and turned off all but the system fonts. I repaired permissions. I can't think of anything else to do!

Identical result every time: crash as soon as the document (new or existing) begins to open.

Hi Karyn -

If you notice there was absolutely no suggestion in my reply pertaining to
reinstalling Office :) I'm glad you took the additional initiative to
reapply the updates, but reinstalling does absolutely no good unless you do
a proper Removal first. Even at that, reinstalling Office is a last resort
on a Mac... The application files are the only ones replaced & they are
rarely the ones causing the problem.

Cleaning the font caches was a good idea but turning off all but System
fonts was a step too far. Office relies on some fonts *it* installs, so I'd
suggest you turn them back on. Use Font Book to resolve duplicates & check
for damaged fonts. Unless it finds errors fonts shouldn't be the problem.

Then shut down your Mac for a few minutes & go from there.

What would have been the next step is to test your Normal template, so
proceed to that after the above. Make sure Word isn't running at the time
you do. Guidelines for doing so are on the following page:

http://word.mvps.org/mac/MacWordNormal.html
