Yes you can. I have Office 98/01/v.X and 2004 on my machine.

Since I like to keep a pristine 2004 system, I have a separate identity
for testing with v.X. That way my preferences folder don't have both
version 10 and 11 prefs. I use the Shared folder to pass docs between
them.

That's a pretty good option. I usually add references in Word through copy
and paste between the two apps anyway so I can usually keep on using Word
2004 for most of the work and I only launch Word X when I need to format the
manuscript.
