Word 2004 freezes while recording macro

Janehere

Version: 2004
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger)

Following Help, I do this:
1. On the Tools menu, point to Macro, and then click Record New Macro.
2. In the Macro name box, type a name for the macro.
3. In the Store macro in box, click the template or document in which you want to store the macro.
4. In the Description box, type a description for the macro.
To assign the macro to shortcut keys, click Keyboard. In the Commands box, click the macro you are recording. In the Press new shortcut key box, type the key sequence.

Then it freezes, I force quit Word, and start over. Same thing happens.

Hi Jane -

Most are familiar with the procedure:) Rather than just parroting the
instructions it would be quite helpful to know what you actually did in an
effort to comply with each step of same. You also need to supply your
specific update levels of Office & OS X.

Of course I know you know. I just wanted you to know I at least know enough to go to Help and do what it says. Which I did up to the point where it froze. Since I believe I did exactly what it said, I don't know how to describe it in more detail. Can you give me an idea of what you need?

OK, let me give you this blow-by-blow and see if it helps.

tools/macro/record new macro
Macro name: CUPen
Store in: All documents (Normal)
Description: space endash space
Keyboard: I click it.
Commands: Normal.NewMacros.CUPen is highlighted. Sometimes I click it anyway, sometimes I don't—makes no difference.
Current keys: field is empty
Save changes in: Normal
Press new shortcut key: I hold down Control and hit N—nothing appears in field, Assign button does not become active—pinwheel appears—nothing else happens
Force quit Word
Sometimes I restart computer—makes no difference

OK, this is what I needed - Thanks for the info:)

I just went through your steps and the only issue is with the character
following the N - the "trigger" can only be one character although you can
use a compound modifier (such as Shift+Command+N). However, that wouldn't
have caused the hang. Believe there is a problem with your Normal template.

Either the system isn't able to write to it or it isn't allowing itself to
be written to. Try this;

With no Office apps running go to your MUD folder & drag Normal to your
Desktop, then launch Word. It will create a new one so it may take a moment
longer than usual for it to fully launch. Once it does try recording your
macro again. Should you still have a problem post back with details.

If the new Normal works you can dispose of the original *unless* you have
other customizations you want to retrieve Directions on recovering macros,
custom toolbars, etc. from the original are here if you need them:

I changed the shortcut keys from two to three. That doesn't sound like exactly what you said, but it worked. Thanks so much. So glad I didn't have to attempt anything with Normal (what and where is a MUD folder?) but for the moment at least I don't have to.
