Word 2004 gif Transparency problems (mac)

While I have no problems in previous versions of Word, I can’t get
gif files to remain transparent in Word 2004 (mac). They’re good
until I close the file and reopen it. Then there’s a terrible black
strobed image where the transparency should be. Anyone?

Word does not support transparent images, either .GIF or PNG.
