Word 2004 Grammar Preferences grayed out

My son's installation of Word 2004 won't grammar check. In the
preferences box the Grammar options are grayed out.

I followed the instructions to reset the preferences files in the
Library, but this did not fix it.
I have selected English (US) for the Dictionary.

What else can I try?

You don't select English for the Dictionary, you have to format the text as
English.

Check the suggestions here and see if anything applies/works. See especially
#3, and #1 for how to make sure Word is using the right language.

The text is formatted as US English. I checked the Style for Normal in this
document and set the default to US English as well. Still, the Grammar
option is grayed out.

Now I don't know if this is relevant, but I was unable to use the installer
on the MS Office CD to install Office. For some reason, the installer gets
through the part of inputting the license key, starts the install, then
after a few moments of copying a few files, jumps to the "Finish". But
nothing was installed. We had to drag the MS Office folder from the CD to
the Applications folder to get it installed. Would that have some affect on
whether the proper files were put in place?

Since my last post I have uninstalled Office using the uninstaller, and
reinstalled again (having to drag the folder to install again).

We used this CD to install Office on our other 2 computers at home (it's a 3
license Education copy), and they work fine. One is running 10.2.8, the
other 10.4 like this one.

Hi Doug,

Can you open the Microsoft Office\Shared Applications\Proofing Tools folder
and see if you have the following files?
English Grammar
English Grammar Dictionary
English Hyphenation
English Spelling
English Thesaurus

Fergal,

Thank you for this...it appears this was the problem. These files were NOT
in the Proofing Tools folder. Evidently the CD drive on this iBook is bad
and did not read all the files when I did a drag install of MS Office.

I went to one of our other computers with a working installation of Office
and copied the files you listed to the iBook and now the grammar checker is
working.

I appreciate your help!

Doug
