Word 2004 Hyperlink problem - Please help

Hello All:

I hope one of you can help me.

I am trying format a hyperlink so that the link would be "CITE:12345"

No mater what I do, Word puts something, file://CITE/12345 or
localhost://CITE/12345 or whatever before the text that I want.

I need to share this document with PC word users who expect the link to
simply be "CITE:12345"

I've tried changing the hyperlink base and have also played with the
update links options to no avail.

Can anyone solve this?

Thansk!

A maybe....

Go to Word | Preferences | General. Click the obscure Web Options
button. Under Files, uncheck "update links on save" if checked.

Hopefully that will prevent Word doing anything to your links.

Hmm... I'm wondering how PC Word would interpret that. CITE:12345
implies that CITE is a URI schema, which I'm not familiar with.

AFAIK, Word supports the more standard URI schemas: http://, mailto:,
ftp://, gopher:// and file:// (but there may be others).

Hi,

Thanks for the suggestion. I actually already tried that. It doesn't
work, at least not for me.

Apparently, PC word doesn't care.

I'm preparing a doc that will go on a proprietary service that uses
that format. Unfortunately, everything that I try to send to them has
links that look like file://CITE:, when all they want to see is CITE:

Any thoughts out there on a way besides "hyperlink" to embed this? I
couldn't figure out an answer using Fields but maybe there's one?

Grrr...

There are two "update links" options, but if you already got that one
too....

You might try locking the fields after manually editing them--see the
Help topic "Prevent changes to information inserted by a field". You'll
probably need to let the service know you've done this.

What are the other things you've tried, that are included in "No mater
what I do"? At what point in the process does Word change your hyperlinks?

I've tried the options that you suggested, the internet options under
Auto correct options. I've tried making my own link using some field
commands but couldn't make that work.

It seems that word changes what I've entered as soon as I hit the OK
button in the hyperlink dialogue box.

Try this: let Word change it when you hit OK, then hit opt-F9 to show
field codes, and manually edit the hyperlink filepath. Test by saving
and going into Print Preview to see if Word changes it back.

Hi,

That seemed very promising, but when my associate opened the doc on her
machine, the "file://localhost... " was back in there. This only
happens Mac<->PC. When I open her files, which are correct on her
machine, I see the same, unwanted "file://localhost..." in her links,
This doesn't happen PC<->PC. Very vexing. :-(
