Word 2004 - Issue saving to Server Shared Folder

SGetz

I have a few users that have recently been getting an error when using
Word 2004 11.1.1 on Mac OX 10.3.8 saving files to a Novell Netware 6
SP4 Server using the Prosoft Client. When opening and saving a file to
their server space, things will work fine for about 20 saves, then they
will get a message like "office 2004 word cannot complete the operation
because too many files are open" and, after that they will recieve
errors like the file will not save anywhere, or it will delete the file
on the server. This has been an issue for some time, and happens to
most users on a daily basis, mutliple times daily. I have tried to get
them to save their files and work locally, but due to the nature of the
content, they need to be working off a server because the file is
shared with several users.
Any ideas as to what might be causing this issue? Any help is
appreciated...
Thanks!

Yes, it is the Prosoft NETWARE FOR OS X, IP Edition that we are using,
to connect to our Netware servers. That article at least makes me feel
better that it is not just us having the issue.

By the way, I just realized that your version of the Novell server is 6.4.
Perhaps you should update to 6.5? If/when you do, PLEASE post back and let
us know if it makes any difference with the 'save to server' issues.

Actually the version of the server is Netware 6.0 Service Release 4. We
unfortunatly cannot update at this time to 6.5. I have been wondering
though, has anyone tried using the servies for UNIX on Netware instead
of the Prosoft Client? Would that maybe work better? Right now the only
other option I have, sorta, is the Appletalk NLM, but from what I have
been told, that might be going away very soon...

Hi Scott,

I can't answer your questions, but I will shortly be posting the following
contribution from another newsgroup poster (Shari Kubitz) to the "Can't Save
to Server" article. Maybe it will help? Let us know.

Errors Saving Mac Word Files to Novell Netware 5 Servers

When OS 10.3.x users attempt to save Mac Word 10 files to a Novell Netware 5
server, the following errors and/or symptoms may occur:

Disk is full error
Too many files are open error
Unrecoverable disk errors
Inability to save a Word Work file
An abundance of Word Work files
Files disappear and are replaced by Word Work files

In addition to the errors/symptoms above, when OS 10.3.x users attempt to
save Mac Word 2004 files to a Novell Netware 5 server, the following may
also occur:

Word program quits.
Text disappears when file is resaved after an initial save.
Strange characters appear in place of text when file is resaved after an
initial save.

In all cases, files saved to the local computer do not result in the above
problems (although you may notice an abundance of Word Work files)

A patch from Novell (Technical Information Document (TID) 10094653
<http://support.novell.com/cgi-bin/search/searchtid.cgi?/10094653.htm> )
seems to substantially improve the situation and you should also notice that
you no longer get inundated with Word Work files. This fix requires that
³afp,nlm² file be replaced with the same file from the Netware 6.0 service
pack 5.

Following this fix, the only problem we see with Word 10 is that a file
modified about 50 times may provide a "too many files open error". This
seems to be resolved with the installation of Word 2004.

Hi Scott,

I was just re-reading the Chris Pryce article on the Novell page at
"http://word.mvps.org/MacWordNew/Can'tSaveToServer.htm", as well as the
Shari Kubitz article below. It seems to me that the key to solving at least
most of the 'save to server' problems is applying the SP 5 for Netware 6.0
(not Netware 6.5 as I said before). Is there some reason why you can't do
that?

I will have to talk with the Netware Administrator. One issue we have
with installing any patches right now on our Systems is that we cannot
have any down time, so we were trying to avoid that.
