Word 2004 just updated to 11.3.9

After seeing this article:
http://www.macminute.com/2007/11/06/office-mac-2004-update/

I ran the Office 2004 updater from Word/Help

On launching after update, Word still shows its version as 11.3.8, both in
the "About . . ." and in the Finder.

Hopefully, it will fix the problem: " . . . . an issue that causes Word 2004
to quit unexpectedly when you print a document." This had happened
frequently since I installed Leopard.

Respectfully, Norm

That's alright. If you download the installer from the Mactopia website, you
can have a look at the read me file that included with the disk image. The
readme document always lists the files that are being updated, and in this
case, it mentions the following:

Microsoft Component Plugin 11.3.9
WordPDE.plugin 11.3.9

So check these files in the Applications/Microsoft Office 2004/Office folder
and see if they are up-to-date. Since only these components are affected by
the update, Microsoft Word still remains at its previous version number,
which is 11.3.8.

Hi Norm -

Haven't heard from you in a while. I didn't really see a question in your
post, but I'll offer a couple of in-line comments anyway:

Seldom do interim updates affect *all* products in the suite, so only those
that do get modified will reflect a different version number. It's possible
that the update changed something other than Word, itself. There is viable
argument on each side as to whether they *should* all reflect the same
version number [to avoid this type of confusion] but the fact is they
don't:) If you want to find out for sure what has been applied you can take
a look in the MS Office 2004 folder & open the Update Log file (not sure of
the exact location & am not at a Mac right now, but I'm sure you'll find
it).
Hopefully, it will fix the problem: " . . . . an issue that causes Word

I don't have much to offer as I've not switched to Leopard as yet - and have
no intention to do so until *after* the first rev. is released - but you may
want to see my reply in the ~mac.office.excel group:

Not sure it's all that viable - it just substitutes one problem for
another...<g>

In previous versions, every component version was updated to the latest
one. It meant:

1) Every update, there needed to be a patch for each of the *dozens* of
component files that make up Office, even when almost all of them were
unaffected by the update - more to test, more to go wrong...

2) It can be more complicated troubleshooting a problem when Entourage
11.3.9 is exactly the same as 11.3.6, 11.3.7, and 11.3.8, except for the
little patch that changed its version number. It's far easier to
determine that, no, just because Entourage started flaking out when you
installed update 11.3.9, it doesn't mean *that* was the problem... What,
you installed Leopard and a haxie at the same time? Let's see....

The "perfect" solution would be, IMO, for the "About" dialog to display
both the version of the application and the version of the Microsoft
Component Plugin, which gets updated every version.

Well, notice I didn't take a side on the point;-)

Now that's quite a stroke of genius - have you made such a suggestion to
MacBU?

Better yet, why not have the Microsoft Office AutoUpdate application
show the component version somewhere in that window.....along with the
already listed when to check for updates.

In fact, I wish they would had a history section to that app as
well...

Just my 2 cents..

Choose Help menu => Send Feedback on Word, as Bob mentioned.

MacBU staff do action feedback, but not if it's not sent. And while MacBU
people usually keep an eye on this forum, they aren't doing so at the moment
-- they are all getting Office 2008 ready...
