I have two questions related to working with Word 2004 docs from a
network share. All of my testing so far has been using Sharepoints to
create individual shared folders.
First, I've noticed that some other programs (such as Appleworks) will
not let you open a document that another user already has open. Other
programs (such as TextEdit) will let you open the file, but they will
warn you if the file has been updated by another use after you opened
it. Word 2004 doesn't seem to do either. In my testing, connected to
the same sharepoint with two users (User A and User B). Here is what I did:
User A opens the file.
User B opens, modifies, and saves the file.
User A modifies and saves the file.
When User A saved the file, it saved without any warning, overwriting
the changes of the User B in the process.
Is this the way it is designed to work, or am I doing something wrong?
Second question: When I open a file on the network shared folder, make
changes and save, a new folder called "Temporary Items" is created. If
I browse the folder, I find the following inside: a folder called "504"
which contains a folder called "TemporaryItems". The last folder is empty.
This only happens when saving to a shared folder created with
Sharepoints. When I open and save files to a folder shared with
standard OS X file sharing, I do not see the Temporary Items folder.
Finally, this only occurs if I open a file that already exists in the
shared folder. If I save a new file to a shared folder, the Temporary
Items folder does not appear.
Thanks for any help!
