Word 2004 not responding

Hi,

I'm running Mac OS X 10.4.9 and Word 2004 as part of Office.

When I try to open a .doc document with word, "word" becomes non-
responsive and I have to force quit it. Likewise if I create a new
document in word, type anything, then try to save it the program locks
up and has to be force quit again.

Could someone please give me some advice. I've already used one of my
free phone calls as well as one of my free e-mail helps for Office"
problems. Soon the are $35.00 each. I've only had this for about
three months...this is going to be a problem.

Thanks. I appreciate the fact that there are those out there who take
the time to help.

Hi Dave:

This is no big drama -- it's a ten-minute fix once you know how to fix it
:)

Because it is happening to both old and new documents, it's something common
to both. That's either the Normal Template or its the Preferences.

The Normal Template is easiest to fix:
http://word.mvps.org/mac/MacWordNormal.html

Don't bother "testing" it, simply close Word and delete it (you must empty
the trash...). If the problem goes away, that's what it was. If the
problem is still there when you restart, then it's "Preferences":

Do this:
http://word.mvps.org/Mac/DamagedPrefs.html

Again, Word must be quit, not just minimized or it won't allow you to
delete. If the problem is still not fixed, work our way slowly and
carefully through the suggestions here, repeating any you have already don,
working in sequence down the list:

Hope this helps

Hi John,

Thanks. Once again it's great that people are willing to spend time
helping those of us who are less knowledgeable.

Prior to you response I had tried to "test" the Normal file. That
didn't work, so I ended up re-updating the "word" software. My "about
word" said I already had 10.3.5 but I reloaded it anyway. Somewhere
in the troubleshooting help it said that even though your "about
word" says you're updated, sometimes changes occur in the software
that then aren't affected by your old update and need to be re-
updated. Uh, Okay...

Now it works.

Thanks again!
