Word 2004 numbered list leaves gap between numbers and list item at 7and 8

Strange thing happening. When I create a numbered list using Roman
numerals, when I get to items 7 and 8, there is a gap between the
number and the list item. This only happens for list items number 7
and 8. 9 and 10 will go back to normal. This is happening to everyone
in my class. Any ideas why this happens?

Thanks

Your list numbers are followed by a tab. "VII." and "VIII." are wide
enough to go past the first tab stop, so your list item is placed at the
second tab stop.

Adjust your tab stops to suit

.... Except that the default is for flush right numerals (aligned on the dot
that follows them):) Increasing the tab (& text hanging indent) will
probably fix the gapping, but I'm guessing that the numerals also look like:

I.
II.
III.
IV.
V.
VII.
VIII.
IX.

If so, the Number Position has been set to Left (or possibly Centered).
Setting it back to Right will also fix things up & result in a neater &
cleaner alignment:

I.
II.
III.
IV.
V.
VI.
VII.
VIII.
IX.
X.

Hmmm... well, yeah, I used the information that there *was* a gap to
make the assumption that the user wasn't using the "default" right
alignment...

HOWEVER...

....right alignment is *ONLY* "the default" if one chooses a "default"
Roman numeral List Number format from the Format/Bullets and
Numbering... dialog.

If instead you apply number formatting via the Formatting Palette (in
the Bullets and Numbering pane, click the Numbering button, then select
Roman numerals from the Style popup), the Roman numerals are *LEFT*
aligned (one might argue: "by default").

It never ceases to amaze me how utterly inconsistent the Word U/I is.

And FWIW, right-aligned Roman Numerals, with their raggedy ends sticking
out to the left, are far uglier and more distracting than leaving a bit
of a gap. Just my NSHO. <vbg>

Didn't realize that - I never use the FP for that purpose... maybe that's a
part of why!

I think the proverbial description revolves aroud the root word 'perplex':)

To which you're certainly entitled - and as long as you don't use the dots
along with 'em I won't argue<g>. If you *do* add 'em on - well, that ragged
vertical string of dots gives me the jitters just thinking about it... Kinda
like using spaces instead of tabs :)

Your tab is set too far to the left.
