Word 2004: preview not available

C

Chris Bailey

One of my clients using Word 2004 has pointed out something odd about how
the preview function doesn¹t seem to work with files created in Word X or
earlier. We¹ve checked her preferences and in the Save section we have ³save
preview picture with new documents² set. If I create a brand-new document,
this works, but if I open and resave an old document -- even if I do a ³save
as² to give it a whole new file name -- the preview function never works
(where it normally shows the preview, it just says ³preview not available²).
Anyone else seeing this problem?

It's not a "problem". The online help specifically says that the preview
will be created only for *new* documents created from the Normal
template, and that is indeed the case. So it works as expected. m.

Okay... I spent about fifteen minutes digging around in help and cannot find
this reference. Can you please tell me where this note is to be found?

I'm not sure about Help, but it is in the note that appears when you mouse
over the option in the preferences dialog.

Chris:

Go to File>Properties>Summary and check the ³Save preview with this
document² box.

Then save.

The preview picture generated by Word 2004 is in a different format to that
generated by Word X (I think Word 2004 uses PICT and Word X uses TIFF). If
you have a Word Vx preview on a document, Word 2004 thinks there is no
preview. If Word 2004 wrote the preview, Word Vx can¹t see it.

Cheers

I doubt Word 2004 is using PICT - an archaic format on the Mac which seems
to be on the verge of being deprecated by Apple. All the newer OS X Apple
applications seem to use TIFF or PDF. The Preview seems to be an OS-related
thing. Perhaps it's the other way around - Word X maybe used PICT and 2004
may use TIFF. Just speculating...
