word 2004 printer metrics gone

SInce Word Mac 98, I have had to use the "use printer metrics" option
to format standard courier font letters avoid expansion or kerning
problem caused by differences between MAC fonts and MS fonts . There
are some items in MIcrosoft history of papers that explain the
differece: in short, mac courier is MS new courier, and they are not
the same. So, to avoid wrong line and character spacing, I simply
checked the printer metrics option, and this fixed it. However, in
Word 2004, it seems the printer metrics feature has been cut or
changed, and it no longer works. I can get partial fix by using exact
line spacing at 12, but it it not the same (and it often has to be
redone for each document.). People at MS seemed to say this was now a
known problem, which seems to mean they don't intend to fix it. Any
one have any ideas on this?

When they say it's a known problem, it doesn't mean they don't intend to fix
it. It means exactly what they say. Whether or not they fix it (and how
soon) will depend on their schedule for releasing Office 2004 updates and on
their list of priorities. The higher priorities are often those about which
people make the most noise, so it would behoove you and everyone else who is
bothered by this problem to send feedback via the Feedback link on Word's
Help menu.

(By the way, you have installed the Office 2004 SP 1, right?)

Yes, added the update in hope this would be fixed, but no luck. I did
try to get MS to deal with this when 2004 first released. Suggested
that Word 2004 may have inadvertently deleted the "use printer
metrics" functionality, and someone would just add it back. That
didn't seem to fly well. Strange is that Word X had the feature, so
it is not an OS X version issue.
