Word 2004 problems on MacBook

Hi - can anyone help me? Word 2004 on my Macbook (1 year old) has decided to suddenly stop opening documents that have already been saved and saving new documents. Whole application gets stuck, the fan comes on and then I have to force quit. Tried everything ie opening from different locations and different documents. I have also done the repair permissions thing on Disk Ultility. Can anyone help me please?

Work through them one by one until something helps. If nothing does,
post back. The most common culprit is a corrupted Normal template or
damaged Preferences file.
