Word 2004 question

How good is it and how many more features does it have over Office98?
Office98 was nice in the 8.x days, but has not been the best in the OSX days
running classic mode for me. It works, but I hope I win this ebay auction
for the 2004 version.

I notice one new feature it has is a audio notetaker. Considering the
ibooks weak mic can I expect much from this featuren during a school
lecture, or is the problem with the ibooks mic a software and not a hardware
limitation?

I mean what audio quality can I expect from this mic in a lecture hall? My
tape recorder works okay, but a digital works better. However digital files
are huge and burning them to a CD is a much bulkir alternative to a micro
tape.

Thanks,

John

Well its why I use my Sony Tape recorder for lectures.

The built in mic on my Jornada 720 is much nicer than the one on my ibook.
Its amazing that a PocketPC can outdual a full blown notebook.

Hi John:

I won't try to emulate Elliott's style, clever though it is :)

The Audio notes in Mac Word 2004 work quite well, but you need to be
aware of a couple of "issues".

The first is that they embed the audio recording into the document. If
you choose to do that, please don't come back here later asking why
your "Document that contains only a few pages of text" is now over 650
MB :) Audio files are HUGE...

If you DO embed audio in the document, chances are you will not be
able to get the document open in Word on the PC. Sometimes you can,
sometimes you can't. You won't be able to "play" the audio on the PC.

You "can" extract the audio from the document using Word on the Mac.
do that before you send it anywhere :)

What gets recorded is exactly what comes out of the microphone. I
find that the microphone on the iBook works really well for talking to
Beth using iChat. for anything else: use a decent microphone.

As an elderly broadcast recording engineer, I can tell you that in a
modern building, using a microphone that costs less than $400, or any
microphone small enough to carry, any sound you get further than 12
feet from the speaker will NOT be worth having.

At my local electronics store they sell little radio microphones for
12 bucks each. Small enough to leave on the lectern, and cheap enough
to get stolen :)

Cheers
