Word 2004 quits when using return key

Okay, this has to be *the* oddest Word problem I've ever seen. I've got
three blue-and-white G3 systems upgraded with Sonnet G4/500MHz processors
running OS X 10.3.5 and Office 2004. Two of the systems run flawlessly. The
third has a 50 percent change of Word quitting when you hit the return key.

I've tried:

* changing to two different keyboards (with new USB cables)
* using a PCI USB card to replace the built-in USB ports
* repairing permissions
* swapped the video card with one of the working systems (that video card
was the only thing that made it hardware-different from the working systems)
* ran a TechTool Pro 4.0.2 full hardware diagnostic -- no errors
* in the end, thinking the driver for the video card (which as an ATI Orion
PCI card and the driver was described as written for 10.2, not 10.3), I
ended up nuking the system and rebuilding it from scratch -- erased the hard
drive, reinstalled all the software from scratch and restored only his
documents and his Entourage 2004 identity

None of these have made any difference. Ten minutes into using Word on the
system after the overhaul, it crashed when I hit the return key again. Has
anyone seen this problem? Is it an established bug? Why does it only affect
this one system when the other two are practically identical? Any ideas or
suggestions will be appreciated.

Wait. Does it quit or does it crash? There's a big difference. If it's
crashing, you get a crash log, and this will tell you something about
what the problem is.

(One tiny idea - is Entourage working? I ask because Word gets very
unhappy if it can't find the Entourage stuff, such as the address book.)

Sorry, "crash" would have been the correct term, not "quit". I've looked at
these crash logs before, but I never find anything in them that means
anything to me. I've included it below, just in case it means something to
someone else.

No, Entourage is working fine. The only problem he has is with Word, and the
crashing *only* happens when using the return key. Like I said, it's the
weirdest problem I've ever seen...

No, Entourage is working fine. The only problem he has is with Word, and the
crashing *only* happens when using the return key. Like I said, it's the
weirdest problem I've ever seen...

Well, you were right - it's not a very revealing crash log. But it seems
to be software. Maybe Word doesn't run reliably on this machine
(blue-and-white G3 systems upgraded with Sonnet G4/500MHz, doesn't
exactly sound supported), but otherwise I would just look for some
difference between the machines... Sorry... m.
