Wild guess: use Entourage to set up your default user (the "Main
Identity"). The reason for this guess is that Word will crash early on
if it has trouble finding the Office-wide user. m.

If Matt's advice doesn't work, see here:
<http://word.mvps.org/MacWordNew/TroubleshootingIndex.htm>
(If using Safari, hit Refresh once or twice; or use Internet Explorer for
this site.)

It could be a third party add-in conflict or a problem with the normal
template (less likely) or one of a number of things.

By the way, removing all MS fonts won't necessarily eliminate a font
conflict. See here: <http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=313535>

Hope this helps.
