In the course of my work, I get many documents from Windows using
colleagues that include embedded Word, Excel or Powerpoint files.
Running Word 2004 version 11.1.1 under OS X 10.3.9, I can open Word and
Excel files that I receive in this way. Powerpoint files are another
matter though. Each and every time I double click on one, I get the
error "Word cannot edit the Powerpoint presentation". If it wasn't
running before, Powerpoint is launched though. I've looked at the
program help, and it suggests selecting the embedded object, and going
to Edit:Links, but this menu item is always greyed out for me.
Along with this, I have a very strange display problem that affects all
three types of files. In the document, they should be displayed as
icons with their names below. However, sometimes I see both icon and
filename, sometimes I see an icon and a filename that is totally mixed
up - the letters look like they have been printed on top of one another
- and sometimes I don't see anything at all. In this case, double
clicking on what seems to be empty space in the document will open an
embedded file, or, if the file in question is a Powerpoint file, lead
to the above error.
Any suggestions as to what might be happening and how I can cure it
would be gratefully received. I've already tried removing the Font
Cache and OLE registration database with no luck.
