Word 2004 Table of Contents hyperlinks to PDF?

P

Hi,

I've been trying to figure out a way to include table of contents
hyperlinks in a pdf file. There must be something in the word file,
because when I click on a page number in the TOC in Word, it takes me
to that page. I searched these groups, but only found references to
older versions of Word, so I was wondering if there is better
hyperlink support in the 2004 version...or another way to do it
automatically...

Thanks in advance for your help!

Hi Pete,

Install Acrobat. That should do it for you. It tends to take over too
many things, but there are workarounds for that.

As an aside: Depending on the type of publishing you are doing, and
your need to have others review your content in Word format, you could
try MacTeX, which is the primary and best distribution of TeX for OS
X.

http://www.tug.org/mactex/

MacTeX is not WYSIWYG, but gives you excellent PDF output and
excellent typography, plus internal links, external links, and export
to XML, HTML, XHTML, Open Office and tons of other destinations. Of
course, internal links include a linked table of contents. The
learning curve is about that of Word if you are using Word styles to
their designed intent. While MacTeX is free and very cool, it sure
ain't for everyone. Plus collaborative reviews and writing is fairly
difficult if everyone is not using TeX.

Yeah,

I have Acrobat 7.0 Pro. I tried creating a ps file with the distiller
printer and a pdf from the postscript with Distiller, but no luck.
Anything I'm missing? I didn't try the pdfmaker in Word, which I
deactivated because it's so annoying.

And Bob, thanks for the MacTex tip. I have it, but most of the docs I
get are already huge, already formatted Word files, so it's not much
help in most cases.

You are correct - Acrobat 7.0 Pro Mac does not include the functionality
you're looking for. (I haven't checked out version 8 yet.) We have had
success with a product called "Sonar Bookends" from Virginia Systems. I
believe it was fairly inexpensive. It's an addin for Acrobat. Among
other things, it allowed us to hyperlink the TOC in any PDF. We haven't
used it in several years, though we were still running OS 9 and had
Acrobat 5 or 6 at the time. (The company now keeps a couple of PCs
around and we do our PDF conversions there.)

HTH,

Thanks, Kristina. I'll check out Sonar Bookends when I get the chance.
It looks promising.
