Word 2004 to 2008 compatibility problem

Whenever my partner saves a word 2004 document and sends it to me through gmail, it isn't being recognized on my end as a word document. When I click the download link, it says it is an untyped binary document and it has a Quicktime logo beside it. When the document is sitting on my desktop, it has a generic icon and has no recognition as a word doc. However, if I double-click on it, it immediately opens up in word without any assistance.

When other people send me word docs, they are recognized as word docs when they come to me through gmail.

I checked his version of word and it is always saving documents in word 2004 format. It should be recognized as a word doc when it gets to me but it isn't. Why are his word docs coming to me as untyped binary docs?

Based on your description the problem is being incurred on his end... Either
his email software is improperly encoding attachments or the mail server
he's using is chewing them up & spiting them out with the wrong identifiers
- a rather common situation.

He should be able to resolve it on his end by way of his email preferences
or by contacting support for his email server. Just in case - and a good
idea anyway - is to have him zip the file & attach the zipped copy.

Hi Bob,

I agree that it is probably something at his end that is causing the problem.

We both use the same mail server, so I don't think that is the problem because my computer doesn't have this problem. The two encoding choices gmail offer are:

- Use default text encoding for outgoing messages

- Use Unicode (UTF-8) encoding for outgoing messages

Both of our clients are set to "use default". Again, we have the same settings yet my attachments don't corrupt.

does he attach the extension .doc to it or not?

if not he needs when he saves a document to look at lower left corner
and make sure that hide extension is not checked.

while its normally not needed by the Mac system or supposedly even PC
system anymore, Servers sometimes are not properly set up for MIME
types. and sometime will mislabel files.

There are two ways to prevent this first always add the .doc extension
to end of the file.

or make a zip of the file first. then send. Even if server is mis
configured .zip always seems to come through with no problems.
